Lower back pain and sciatica
Done my back in last year, got over it but just had a relapse - fucking lower back pain and pain down my right arse cheek and leg (shooting pain and numbness)

Dosed up on paracetamol to get me through the working day but when it comes in spasms walking like a raspberry.

Should I just man up or go and get one of those poofy heat patch things or stronger pain killers?

You cunts??

Once the lower back hurts it will always come back mine is fucked from doing squats and deadlifts

Most people I know who go to the gym have lower back problems

Although my form is now good my early ego training days with too much weight has messed me up for the rest of my life.

Cup of Tea, I had exactly the same thing and had been suffering everyday for the past year since a first back flare up. It was a fucking disaster and became unbearable.

I had an MRI scan and it showed a disc herniation (exactly as Willtell describes below). The liquidy bit in between two of my vertebrae was squashed and protruding and touching a nerve. Pure fucking agony.

On Monday I had an injection in to the base of my spine (some steroid) while under local anaesthetic and sedated (I was out cold for about 20 mins). I'm a new man. 80% pain free immediately, and it should last between 6mths and a year in which time u can do specific exercises to repair the disc.

Push the NHS, cause from a position of experience I'm telling you that this is what u need to do.

Be well.

In the past I've been given a drug called baclofen. It's a muscle relaxing drug so pretty much the same as a lot of the suggestions on here but prescribed. Really good though.

Ice it to relieve the pain. Your back not the tablet.

With all the lunatics on here taking painkillers and trying to man up it seems like a good idea to talk about life experiences.

Sorry you are so stupid to not understand.

Re: Lower back pain and sciatica
Sciatica is usually caused by a disc (that sits between 2 of the vertebrae) is collapsing and leaking a thick gooey liquid onto the Sciatic nerve that runs down the spine. It aggravates the nerve which isn't used to a thick goo oozing over it.

It's actually a lot more serious than most people realise and for me, I suffered every few years from this for 30 years being told to rest and take it easy until it gets better, which is often the worst thing to do.

Only since moving to France where they address the actual problem rather than in UK where doctors are reluctant to add to an overstretched NHS.

In my case the goo had hardened to form an arthritic growth on the inside of my vertebrae 3,4 &5. It was pinching the nerve and would eventually have cut off the blood supply below that point and I'd have ended up in a wheelchair...

Get it sorted and don't take bullshit. It needs an MRI scan.... or in France an IRM scan. Poxy French have to be different...

Re: Lower back pain and sciatica
The question is, what is causing the pain? If you have a bulging or ruptured disc you may need surgery, or if you have misalignment that is causing back spasms you need a chiropractor.

I'd suggest a chiro first. He'll do an X-Ray to assess structural damage and he'll also be able to see what the discs are doing.

I've had spinal surgery for a ruptured disc to L5-S1, and since the discs in my lower back are badly worn by decades of serious sport (ie, age 80-90) I have weekly chiro maintenance. I have no problems (at the moment) but that will eventually change.

Suggest you get professional help asap.......i played professional cricket on painkillers for over a year and then got the correct diagnosis. Don't fuck about.

I've got some.

Naproxen.

They do the business. But they wipe out your stomach lining. So they prescribe me Ameprazole. Those things are ACE, I can drink my body weight in Fosters without even burping.

Get yourself a MRI scan.... at least you'll know what the fuck is the matter before you start treatment.... as you can imagine disc problems are a totally different kettle of fish to nerve/muscle problems

I had sciatica a couple of years ago. Took a knee in the back playing football.

It is an absolute bastard and I know how you are feeling.

It will clear up on its own eventually, but you can help it along with physio. Get yourself to a gym where they have a sports physio and get an exercise regime designed for sciatica.

There are lots of internet forums for sciatica sufferers to - it won't help your symptoms but it really helps psychologically to swap stories with other people suffering exactly what you have. I found them really helpful anyway.

Good luck mate - and try Voltaren rather than regular pain killers - much more effective.
